Parents/Guardians & Students:

BASH Athletics is pleased to announce that we are officially introducing our first Unified sports team, Unified Track & Field, which will come to Boyertown this spring!

Below is a description of the program and an invitation to our informational meeting.

Unified Track & Field

  • A fully inclusive co-ed after-school high school sports program that successfully brings together students with and without intellectual/developmental disabilities. They train and compete as equal teammates and, through this experience, become friends. IUS teams are considered to be like every other high school interscholastic sports team.
  • A Unified Track and Field team is co-ed and can have a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 40 participants who are in the 9th -12th grades. Students receiving services from the school district up until the age of 21 also are eligible. Spring season interscholastic athletes (including boys and girls track and field team members) are not eligible to join the Interscholastic Unified Track and Field team. (This means you cannot simultaneously play two sports in the spring.)
  • The team consists of a proportional number of Special Olympics-eligible athletes (defined as having an intellectual disability or developmental disability, including autism with a cognitive delay) and students without intellectual or developmental disabilities. Specifically, this means 40% of the roster must be Special Olympics-eligible students, and 40% must be students without a disability. The remaining 20% can be distributed between either of these groups and also includes students with other types of disabilities.
  • Like other interscholastic sports teams, team members commit to attending all after-school practices and competitions for the entire season. We will have 2-3 practices a week.
  • Format: Students select one track event and one field event to train and compete in and may also be selected to one relay team. They are placed in heats with competitors with similar qualifying times or distances in meets. Every heat is scored, with 1st place earning 5 points, 2nd place earning 3 points, and 3rd place earning 1 point for their school's Unified team. The high school with the most cumulative points wins the meet.
  1. Track Events include: 100 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters; 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays.
  1. Field Events include Shot put, running long jump, and mini javelin.
  • Season Length: The season begins with the team's first practices during the week of the start of the PIAA spring sports season. Practices and competitions run through mid-May, depending on the culminating regional championship event date.
  • To register, we need to follow all PIAA sports registration guidelines. For more information on how to register, please visit: https://boyertownathletics.com/main/otherad?contentID=52801313.
